Hornbuckle, a Mortal Kombat Rumour Comes to Life

With Hornbuckle, once again I’ve tackled a fake/rumour Mortal Kombat character. The Hornbuckle rumour came about in the Mortal Kombat II days. MK already had a reputation for hidden stuff at that point, so the message “Who’s Hornbuckle?” that occasionally appeared started the rumour. In the background of the Pit II level there are two fighters, a man on fire (who became Blaze) and a “Green Liu Kang”. Fans quickly adopted the Green Kang as being the mythical Hornbuckle.
Hornbuckle has never really appeared as a main series character so I was more free with my design decisions than normal. So in keeping with Mortal Kombat mythos, I crafted a simple backstory to explain the character. Hopefully you have some MK knowledge, if you don’t the following will no make sense. Shang Tsung likes his magical experiments. One experiment resulted in Meat. Another was Mileena, who is a clone of Princess Kitana mixed with Tartakan features.
I figured if he is doing those things, that after his defeat at the hands of Liu Kang, Shang Tsung would attempt to clone him. The result is my version of Hornbuckle, a green Liu Kang/Tartakan fusion.
I used myself as the model for this pose.

From the original post –
So quite a ways back Ed Boon, creator of Mortal Kombat, put up a pic of a “secret character” called Zebron. He was pretty much an antropomorphic Zebra wearing a Tuxedo….I’m preeeety sure Mr. B was trying to troll the hardcore fanboys and from reactions I recall, it worked.
Anyways, in keeping with my trend of mostly re-designing unliked, unknown and forgotten Mortal Kombat characters I tackled the task of making Zebron a serious character in line with established Mortal Kombat mythology. My line of thinking on this one was pretty simple. Kintaro is basically a bigger meaner striped version of Goro. In Mortal Kombat 3 we are introduced to the Centaurian race who were represented by Motaro. Next step up would be a stripey version and looky here, Ed Boon already created a character, joke or not, who with a few minor modifications becomes the Centaurian Prince Zebron.
Zebrons design elements are mostly derived from African cultures that exist inside the Zebras habitat. I also worked in some minor Asian influences (mostly Japanese). You may notice there are some oddly undetailed areas in this drawing. I pencil, ink and colour my own work and those “blank” areas are places where I will be working in the details digitally.
If you like this (or anything else in my Mortal Kombat fanart series) tweet it to @noobde maybe it’ll end up in the Krypt like Boon’s original drawing.

With the upcoming Mortal Kombat X, I’m back into redesigns at a faster pace. If Nitara were to appear in Mortal Kombat X I picture her as retaining some for her previous “Goth Grrl” appeal but pushing it further. I drew upon influences from Cyber-Goth culture for parts of my redesign. I kept most of her original colour scheme, but added some green to the red and black she wore in the beginning.
Nitara was a favorite of mine in her earlier appearances, her high-low-high combos were always good to catch an opponent off guard!

After the response from James and the T-Rex make a Beer Run, I’ve created Samurai Cowboy Riding a Triceratops Wallpaper. Once again a high resolution render of a dinosaur was used for the Triceratops. The background is a meld of several open commons images found using Google Image Search. The Samurai Cowboy is another Co-worker (who is nicknamed Cowboy oddly enough!)

I’ve created these Dinosaur wallpapers using GIMP, which isn’t exactly my image editor of choice, but serves the purpose when I’m away from home.

I’m pretty sure I don’t need to explain who Spiderman is, so lets get to it. This image was a commission that came at a timely moment for me in January of 2005. I was experimenting with a different style then, both in my line and colour work, so this Spiderman wallpaper might look a little different to you from my other stuff.
